Iris is a night guard at a big sports club in Montevideo Bay and the cliché of the single mother struggling to make ends meet. Sure, she likes to drink and smoke some weed from time to time, but who are we to judge? Once a week she also takes her daughter Renata to work and the two of them have a blast scaring the living bejeezus out of each other in the dark, desolate hallways of the club. But this night is different. There’s something in the air tonight, as Phil Collins would say, and frankly, it doesn’t look good… The owls are not what they seem, as if the full moon has rendered people mad, charging and devouring the night owls that cross their path! In a pang of panic Iris remembers not all the windows of the center are closed and her daughter’s playing in the pool. Then there’s a power shutdown and Renata screams for her mom to come. Not a very good idea…
A first film – LA CASA MUDA – chosen to represent Uruguay at the Oscars, followed by a remake in Hollywood. Strike two: YOU SHALL NOT SLEEP (BIFFF 2019), which became the most profitable Argentinian genre film. This year, Gustavo Hernandez impressed the international press in Berlin with VIRUS-32. After seeing it ourselves, all we can do is nod in utter agreement. Oh, and the number 32? You won’t be disappointed…
