DR. CHEON AND THE LOST TALISMAN (2024)

Any ghost troubles? Have we got the perfect man for you! *GHOSTBUSTERS theme starts playing* No! The name’s Dr. Cheon, a certified shaman that will make all of your supernatural problems go away in a swift ritual of smokes and mirrors and dynamite, lots of dynamite. Thing is, he doesn’t believe one bit of the crap he convinces people of and he finds the reasons for his clients’ problems are generally pretty down-to-earth. But hey, as long as the customers are happy and the cash keeps flowing he’s not complaining. Financially he’s in such a comfortable position that he can even refuse clients, such as this girl from a remote village that comes barking up his tree because her sister is supposedly possessed. Yawn. Until she offers him a hefty sum for his trouble and he magically feels a trip to countryside might actually do him some good. If the mountains covered in ominous mist that welcome him upon his arrival didn’t already alarm him, then his magic bell, which signals the presence of spirits, ringing frantically just might… What if he’s finally up against the real thing?
Despite this being his debut feature, Kim Seong-sik is anything but a rookie. He learnt the ropes as an assistant-director from the best, on the sets of Park Chan-wook (DECISION TO LEAVE), Yeon Sang-ho (TRAIN TO BUSAN) and Bong Joon-ho (PARASITE). For fans of that latter film – and honestly, who isn’t? – watch out for one hell of an Easter egg here! Yes, OK, thank you Mr. Text writer Man, but what about the movie? That’s just the perfect rollicking rollercoaster fun we look for in a BIFFF séance.
